abstract = {The shift from centralized to decentralized energy, with the development of renewable energies, is giving rise to new energy models. Some of these models aim to increase the citizens participation in the energy transition, such as the energy communities. This concept has recently emerged in Europe to encourage the development of local projects and raising citizens' awareness. Our aim is to better understand how such communities emerge to foster them, and to propose a tool for B2T (Business to Territory) Business Developers. We have developed a generic methodology to follow the formation of sociotechnical systems based on a modeling of the Actor-Network Theory. We use the concept of Socio-Energetic Node and propose a model of it to apply our generic methodology to Local Energy Communities. Preliminary results are presented at the end of this paper on a case study.},

abstract = {We are pleased to present the Proceeding book of the 4th IWA Regional Conference on Diffuse Pollution & Eutrophication (DIPCON) that was held in Istanbul, Türkiye from October 24-28, 2022. From widespread pesticide use to heavy metal emissions from vehicular transport to microplastic release into the environment, diffuse pollution has become a major threat to the environment. Widespread soil pollution and eutrophication of water bodies across all continents and their impacts on living organisms and human health are a stark manifestation of the challenges we face. Anticipated climate change is likely to exacerbate the risk to the water resources of numerous regions of the world. Addressing these challenges requires a concerted holistic approach by stakeholders including scientists, engineers, hydrologists, policy makers, NGOs, and water regulators, and awareness and participation on the part of the general public. The purpose of this conference was to bring together these various perspectives thereby contributing to the scientific debate towards alleviating these adverse environmental effects.
DIPCON 2022 was held in Istanbul, Türkiye with more than 120 participants from more than 21 countries. The city of Istanbul, a welcoming vibrant megacity with a magnificent history and natural beauty, is the ideal place to host this meeting. Joining two continents with shores on three different seas, the city underscores the need to protect the environment we live in for the benefit of all.
The conference papers are organized into 13 sessions designed to address the latest technologies and approaches to alleviate the impacts of diffusion pollution on the Environment:
- Reservoir and Surface Water Bodies
- Soil Contamination
- Groundwater Hydrology and Quality
- Emerging Pollutants
- Urban/Industrial Water
- Ecological Protection and Restoration
- Extreme Hydrological Events
- Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation
- Nexus Approach
- Integrated Watershed Management
- Nature-Based Solutions and Implementation
- Wetland Construction and Managements
- Monitoring and Modeling
Participants at the DIPCON 2022 conference elucidated on the threat of diffuse pollution to surface water bodies, groundwater and soil environments and the latest strategies and technologies for environmental protection and restoration to address these threats. The adverse effects of extreme hydrological effects and projected climate change and the need to develop adaptation and mitigation strategies were highlighted. Recognizing the confluence of water, food and energy needs, along with the imperative to maintain ecological services, participants underlined the necessity to implement a Nexus approach and integrated water management plans that involve the active participation of all stakeholders. It is evident that societies need to resort to nature based solutions that balance the need for economic growth and food security with ecological protection. Speakers highlighted the need to utilize the latest technologies to develop models and monitoring tools at all scales for the sustainable use of available resources and the development of informed science-based policies.},

Combining text classification algorithms to detect critical articles and a topological analysis of the terms extracted from the corpus, we reveal two semantic spaces, involving different technological and human entities, but also distinct temporality and issues. On the one hand, the algorithms that shape our daily computing environments are associated with a critical discourse on bias, discrimination, surveillance, censorship and amplification phenomena in the spread of inappropriate content. On the other hand, robots and AI, which refer to autonomous and embodied technical entities, are associated with a prophetic discourse alerting us to our ability to control these agents that simulate or exceed our physical and cognitive capacities and threaten our physical security or our economic mode.},

abstract = {Research collaborations are essential to advance rigorous scholarship, perform transformative science, and accelerate engineering education innovation. With this in mind, the engineering education community should continue investigating and evaluating the key factors that hinder or promote collaborative research within and across institutions, especially amidst efforts to continue to grow the field. Over the last few decades, research collaborations across institutions have grown significantly—however, few studies have examined the relationship between such collaborations and the institutional characteristics such as ranking, geographic location, or classifications (e.g., the Carnegie Classification of Higher Education Institutions) when studying collaboration networks. Our paper uses social network analysis (SNA) to help fill this gap by examining how some of these institutional characteristics are related to the institutions' collaborations and network positions. Social network analysis has emerged as a useful approach to measure research collaboration by evaluating several types of collaboration networks, including co-authorship networks. In this paper, we consider the institution network. Nodes in this type of network represent institutions, while links represent the pairwise collaboration between two institutions. Each link also has a weight that represents the collaboration frequency. The links form a social space that we can map and analyze to reveal systematic patterns in the broader engineering education community that might otherwise pass unobserved. For this study, we collected information about all papers published between 1996 and 2019 in the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) annual conference proceedings. From this dataset, we built the inter-institutional collaboration network and identified structural network properties, connected components, and modularity classes. The network data were then linked to data regarding each institution's (i) Carnegie classification, (ii) rankings based on the 2020 QS World University Rankings, and (iii) geographic location. With this augmented dataset, we were able to answer research questions about factors associated with inter-institutional collaborations through statistical analysis. In doing so, we identify the key patterns, trends, and associations from our networked data. Among the results, we found that a research institution's classification is significantly related to its network positions in the collaboration network, specifically its modularity class. Additionally, we found correlations between the institutions' centrality measures in the network, including the degree centrality, betweenness centrality, and structural holes. Our findings also indicate an association between the institutions' geographical proximity and their research collaborations. Overall, this study provides a lens through which engineering education researchers, faculty members, and administrators can understand the current state of research collaborations within and across institutions. The results can help researchers answer (and raise more) important research questions, support administrators in making decisions on funding and institutional partnerships, and help faculty members design and develop more effective programs that facilitate research collaborations.},

abstract = {Agricultural labor is of great importance as it employs a large part of the population and provides food and other products to everyone around the globe. However, job opportunities in this agricultural sector have been decreasing. In order to change this situation, the rural population seeks to increase productive efficiency and added value in the production stages to enter in agricultural value chains and remain in global markets. However, there are no studies that summarize the advances of the main
contribution of global value chains approach to labor studies in agriculture. To fill this knowledge gap, the aim of the study was to characterize the research domains on agricultural labor in global value chains through a bibliometric review study. Our main findings are that (1) knowledge production on agricultural labor in global value chains is structured in three main research domains:
socioeconomic aspects of labor in value chains; implications of global value chains on labor; technological development of global value chains; (2) the top countries, top institutions, top journals, top authors and most-cited articles are identified. We show for the first time the overview of research on agricultural labor in global value chains indexed in Web of Science, which provides the path of references that can be used as background for further studies. According to FAO, employment opportunities, increasing wages and high-job quality are crucial labor-related conditions to value chains sustainability. However, there is a gap in the literature gathering the specific contribution of value chains approaches to discussions on labor in agriculture. Our aim was to review the state of the international literature on labor in agricultural value chains. A scientometric analysis of the articles indexed in Scopus were performed. The main results were: 1) labor in agricultural value chains is a relative new scientific community lead by research developed by UK, USA, Germany and Kenya; 2) the reference authors, journals, institutions and articles were characterized; 3) the hotspots changed over the past 20 years; 4) researches are structured in six main research domains. Our scientometric review provides an overview about the main characteristics of a new rising scientific community focused in labor in agricultural value chain, as well as a synthesis of knowledge produced to support scientific innovation in this field. Regarding agriculture value chains agents, our results advance the importance of governance to improve employment relations and working conditions in farms in order to promote chain sustainability.},

abstract = {Sustainable development sets up a major challenge for economic activity, climate change, management of organization and society. It follows that the drivers and impacts of frugal innovations (FI) should be analyzed in relation to sustainability as a new socio-economic paradigm. In this study, we note that FI and sustainability are related to two sets of literature mainly studied in isolation until now (with some notable exceptions like Brem and Yven, 2013 and Rosca et al., 2017). Our objective is to realize a necessary conciliation between the two. In others words, our research question is to explore how and to what extent FI is linked to sustainability. We contribute to the literature dealing with FI in three ways. First, we show how FI can generate more sustainable development while FI is not inherently sustainable. Secondly, we draw conclusions regarding a possible taxonomy of FI which is based on two extreme poles i.e., FIs have no marked sustainable effects vs. FIs are fully sustainable. Finally, we carry out an empirical analysis of a sample studies of FIs published in different academic or scientific journals to discover the different between the two forms of FI.},

abstract = {ANR is the French national research agency founded in 2005 and responsible for the project-based research funding. It operates under the authority of the Ministry in charge of Research and Innovation and has to implement the national research strategy. In compliance with the growing need for « open science », in order (i) to give a better visibility to ANR-funded research, and (ii) to create a favourable environment for studying and generating research-based impacts, the agency recently embraced and fostered « open access » and « open data » practices. ANR notably encourages the principal investigators to deposit their publications in an open archive, requires grant holders and applicants to prepare a Data Management Plan, and ensures the circulation of data and knowledge on public grants by providing data for each funded project in standardized formats to facilitate their broad and easy use. In the present poster, we will first describe the type of data made available to the public which provides detailed information on the projects grants funded by ANR from 2005 to 2017.Using three proof-of-principle examples, we also illustrate how this data could be exploited and investigated, at different levels (institutions, PIs and research themes) to study the impacts of ANR on the national scientific production.},

abstract = {Human neuroimaging research aims to find mappings between brain activity and broad cognitive states. In particular, Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) allows collecting information about activity in the brain in a non-invasive way. In this paper, we tackle the task of linking brain activity information from fMRI data with named entities expressed in functional neuroimaging literature. For the automatic extraction of those links, we focus on Named Entity Recognition (NER) and compare different methods to recognize relevant entities from fMRI literature. We selected 15 entity categories to describe cognitive states, anatomical areas, stimuli and responses. To cope with the lack of relevant training data, we proposed rule-based methods relying on noun-phrase detection and filtering. We also developed machine learning methods based on Conditional Random Fields (CRF) with morpho-syntactic and semantic features. We constructed a gold standard corpus to evaluate these different NER methods. A comparison of the obtained F1 scores showed that the proposed approaches significantly outperform three state-of-the-art methods in open and specific domains with a best result of 78.79% F1 score in exact span evaluation and 98.40% F1 in inexact span evaluation.},

In particular, the undergoing processes (e.g. urbanization or land abandonment) and the multiple ecosystems services provided by agricultural areas are requiring to broaden the research at the regional level. Since some decades, the European Union is promoting the collection of agricultural data to evaluate the farmers’ eligibility for subsidies and to assess the Common Agricultural Policy performances. Part of these datasets are being increasingly used beyond their administrative functions, as for the Farm Accountancy Data Network (FADN) and the Land Parcel Identification System (LPIS). Starting from a bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature using these datasets, we will discuss two examples of their application for characterizing cropland and cropping systems. Our aim is to discuss the relevance of these datasets as tools to improve the monitoring and management of agroecosystems at the regional level. },

abstract = {There are multiple on-going debates about the geographical distribution and concentration of knowledge production worldwide. Recent work done by Grossetti et al. (2015) points to a ‘deconcentration’ process of knowledge production, visible not only at country level (linked to the periodic rise of new countries in the overall scientific production landscape, a long-lasting phenomenon), but also at metropolitan level. In a European policy context, this raises the question whether we can also identify such tendencies across the European territory, and whether this specifically applies to frontier scientific fields.
In this demonstration, we have addressed this question for knowledge production in the field of Nano sciences & technologies (S&T), accounting for different kinds of knowledge production (scientific, technological and project-based). The attempts to characterise the dynamics of Nano S&T are not new (Noyons et al., 2003). One pre-condition for the empirical analysis of Nano S&T is its delimitation in relevant R&I datasets. Kahane and Mogoutov (2007) have developed a fully lexical approach which remained however static (considering only the whole period covered). This has meanwhile been advanced to a ‘dynamic‘ approach (Kahane et al., 2014) where the lexical delineation evolves each year according to the field specific vocabulary produced.},

abstract = {The Guatemalan Government de-monopolized and privatized the electricity market between 1996-2000, with the justification that, first, rural electricity coverage – which was less than 50% at the time – was a significant obstacle to human development; and second, that there were large unexploited energy resources, especially hydroelectricity. The strategy led to quadruple the installed capacity of the network in twenty years, while private hydro generation grew 6000% (Paz Antolín 2004, Ministerio de Energía y Minas 2016). However, neighboring rural communities have received the hydroelectric expansion with sustained protests and resistance, because of their impact on water use, among other claims (Orantes 2010). This has led to a perceived association of hydropower with extractive industries such as mining or oil. Take for example this quote from the activist blog, Albedrío.org: The Mayan People on resistance know that there is no more territory to go as they run away from the “development of the others”. Organized communities have already made around 80 public consultations that have clearly rejected the hydromining invasion of their territories [translation by the author, emphasis added] (Itzanmá 2014). Such association is interesting from an STS perspective, for two reasons, mainly: first, it challenges conventional views of hydropower as a clean energy source that reduces environmental impacts, especially those related to climate change; and second, because it suggests the idea of a large heterogeneous techno-industrial complex, that comprises hydroelectricity and mining and that is extracting the valuable natural resources of one country.},

abstract = {Social studies of cancer research at the international level have contributed to a better understanding of the developmental dynamics – both organizational and epistemic – of this field (Keating & Cambrosio, 2012). In contrast, despite its robust development, oncology research in Portugal has been the subject of only few studies. Most of them have a strong focus on the first half of the 20th century (Raposo, 2004; Costa, 2010, 2012a; 2012b), while a few focus on more contemporary events (Nunes, 2001). Consequently, we do not have a clear picture of recent trends in oncology research in Portugal, and how it integrates into the international landscape. This hinders public accountability of oncology research while also limiting the analysis of how this research relates to health care delivery, health outcomes, and health policy formulations. This paper presents the first results of an ongoing research project on the organizational and epistemic development of oncology research in Portugal, covering the period from the end of the 20th century to 2015. Among other issues, we intend to explore the extent to which oncology research in Portugal mirrors the international dynamics at a smaller scale, and the extent to which it presents features of its own. The study draws upon computer-based analysis of publications using the platform CorText (http://www.cortext.net/) of IFRIS (Institut Francilien Recherche, Innovation, Société), along with interviews with Portuguese oncologists and related practitioners.},

abstract = {Text analysis methods based on word co-occurrence have yielded useful results in humanities and social sciences research. Whereas these methods provide a useful overview of a corpus, they cannot determine the predicates relating co-occurring elements with each other. For instance, if France and the phrase "binding commitments" co-occur within a sentence, how are both elements related? Is France in favour of, or against binding commitments? Different natural language processing (NLP) technologies can identify related elements in text, and the predicates relating them. We are developing a workflow to analyze the Earth Negotiations Bulletin, which summarizes international climate negotiations. A sentence in this corpus can contain several verbal or nominal predicates indicating support and opposition. Results were uneven when applying Open Relation Extraction tools to this corpus. To address these challenges, we developed a workflow with a domain model, and analysis rules that exploit annotations for semantic roles and pronominal anaphora, provided by an NLP pipeline. },

abstract = {This article objectives are twofold. Its aim is both to introduce the principles of CrawText: an online data collection tool, and to identify some perspectives on the possible use of those digital traces for the analysis of public issues. CrawText specificity is to enable the construction of controlled corpora focusing on a given topic. Besides it allows to track the evolution of digital territories along time, paving the way toward the monitoring of actors and content dynamics in those public spaces. We will briefly illustrate those analytical perspectives with a case study on current discussions about the Climate Change Conference COP 21 to be held in Paris next Fall.},

abstract = {It is now commonplace to observe that we are facing a deluge of online information. Researchers have of course long acknowledged the potential value of this information since digital traces make it possible to directly observe, describe and analyze social facts, and above all the co-‐evolution of ideas and communities over time. However, most online information is expressed through text, which means it is not directly usable by machines, since computers require structured, organized and typed information in order to be able to manipulate it. Our goal is thus twofold: 1. Provide new natural language processing techniques aiming at automatically extracting relevant information from texts, especially in the context of social sciences, and connect these pieces of information so as to obtain relevant socio-‐ semantic networks ; 2. Provide new ways of exploring these socio-‐semantic networks , thanks to tools allowing one to dynamically navigate these networks , de-‐construct and re-‐ construct them interactively , from different points of view following the needs expressed by domain experts.},

abstract = {A broad bibliographical study suggests a scarcity of quantitative models of simulation integrating both network and urban growth. This absence may be due to diverging interests of concerned disciplines, resulting in a lack of communication. We propose to proceed to an algorithmic systematic review to give quantitative elements of answer to this question. A formal iterative algorithm to retrieve corpuses of references from initial keywords, based on text-mining, is developed and implemented. We study its convergence properties and do a sensitivity analysis. We then apply it on queries representative of the specific question, for which results tend to confirm the assumption of disciplines compartmentalisation. },

The difference between signatures and traces is the difference between intentional scientific claims (an article or a vitae) and by-products of activities that take place on the web. abstract = {This paper investigates the evolution of the computational linguistics domain through a quantitative analysis of the ACL Anthology (containing around 12,000 papers published between 1985 and 2008). Our approach combines complex system methods with natural language processing techniques. We reconstruct the socio-semantic landscape of the domain by inferring a co-authorship and a semantic network from the analysis of the corpus. First, keywords are extracted using a hybrid approach mixing linguistic patterns with statistical information. Then, the semantic network is built using a co-occurrence analysis of these keywords within the corpus. Combining temporal and network analysis techniques, we are able to examine the main evolutions of the field and the more active subfields over time. Lastly we propose a model to explore the mutual influence of the social and the semantic network over time, leading to a socio-semantic co-evolutionary system. },

abstract = {The increasing use of social networks has given rise to a new kind of relations between residents and authorities at the municipal level, where residents can speak directly to administrators and representatives, can take part in open discussions, and may have more direct involvement and influence on local affairs. The more direct democracy facilitated by social media outlets fascinates communication and political science researchers. But while most of their attention is drawn to national politics, the municipal arena can be even more affected by these new means of direct communication. This paper focuses on municipal administration on Facebook, and analyzes the discourse that has developed between citizens and local administrators on municipal Facebook pages, using automatic digital tools.
The formal Facebook pages of all of the cities in Israel were extracted using digital tools, and all posts and comments published on these pages in a period of six months were analyzed using automatic linguistic analysis tools that provided information regarding the use and frequencies of words and terms in the texts.
The paper presents the prominent topics, use of language, and basic features of citizens--municipalities interactions in formal Facebook pages. The study discusses the findings, their implications, and the advantages and limitations of using digital tools to analyze texts in a digital research field.},

Chronicles needed to be easily accessible for people to pass them along, and stories lived on in listeners’ short memories. This collective, ever-waning awareness was the technology that kept the tales extant, and this technology required a continuous effort in reminding people never to forget. This way of keeping stories alive also imposed important constrains on the kind and form of the narrative material. Breathtaking epics were perhaps more likely to survive, which could easily tend toward mystification of pre-historic characters. These epics had to be kept in the form of repetitive, easy-to-learn patterns. It comes as a pleasant surprise for us that diverse ancient poems take similar},

Some aspects can, however, be focused on by using the controlled conditions afforded by animal models, a number of which have been developed to study this in utero programming phenomenon. Animal models allow study of the pathophysiology of disease, and afford a means to study the underlying biochemical and molecular biological mechanisms, whilst they cannot be used entirely as a substitute for the study of human diseases. Analysing the contribution of animal models in our understanding of foetal programming as well as their limits requires a systematic review of the existing literature.},

abstract = {This paper presents a global map of technology that characterises the proximity and dependency of technological areas. It addresses the structure of technological output embodied in the network connecting patents to the patent classifications that they are attributed to. The distance between areas of technology is based on the analysis of the co-occurrence of IPC codes assigned to individual patent documents. As our classification of technologies we use an extended version of the WIPO classification of technological fields, unfolding the 35 classes to 389. The global map allows to ‘overlay’ patents produced by a specific organisation or country against the background of a stable representation of global technological invention and to produce comparisons that are visually attractive, very readable, and potentially useful for policy-making and strategic management. As an illustration, the technological portfolios of two large industrial corporations (IBM and BASF) are projected on this global map of technology, highlighting the technological profile of these groups. As such, the map can provide valuable information about promising areas of further technological development, comparative advantages and missing technological competences. },
